Halloween Safety Tips for Your Family
Halloween is right around the corner, and safety is always a concern. As a homeowner, you can do your part to make sure the kids get home safe and sound this year. A quick inspection of your property is all it takes to make sure your house is a safe stop for this years trick or treaters. Here’s a few tips.
Leave The Lights On- Keep the exterior lights on for trick or treaters and your party guests. Always make sure there’s enough light for the whole trip from the street or driveway to your door. You can also add some light fixtures with ground stakes to clearly mark the path to your door.
Remove Obstacles- Pick up your garden tools, roll up your hose, and put the gnomes in the garage. Make sure there’s nothing to trip your guests.
Jack-o-lanterns- Lit candles are always a safety concern, especially when kids are involved. Battery powered illumination in your pumpkins is a safe alternative to burning candles. If you do use an open flame, keep an eye on it and keep flammables out of reach.
Pets- Keep the safety of your fluffy friends as well as your party guests and trick or treaters in mind. Often Halloween can be stressful for pets because they don’t understand why it’s suddenly okay for strangers to come into your yard or on your porch. Halloween candy can also be toxic for your animals so make sure they don’t get their paws on any. Halloween is also a time when pranksters come out to play. Keep your pets inside where they’ll be safe.
Candy- Stick to packaged standards like the big bags available at pretty much every retailer leading up to the season. You can also have candy on hand without peanuts in case your trick or treaters have allergies. Check out the Teal Pumpkin project for more info about offering options for kids with allergies. And be sure to inspect your own kids’ candy before they eat it.
Spooky decorations- If you’re going to put a seven foot tall space monster in the yard, do it safely. Make sure it is secure. You don’t want anything to fall over on a tiny Elsa or Darth Vader. Check your decorations for sharp edges or points that might pose a threat to a seven year old dashing through your yard after some candy. Make sure power cords are in proper working order and are secure to avoid tripping or electrical hazards.
Take precautions and you’ll have a fun and safe Halloween this year!

Selling a Home Doesn’t Have to Be Scary!
It might be the season for goblins and ghosts but selling your home doesn’t have to be scary! Thinking about listing your current home this season? Have no fear! We’ve got some tips to remove the fear factor and help you enjoy the process, no tricks!
Consider the Season –
While you might think spring and summer are the best times to sell your home, there are still plenty of benefits to selling a home in the fall.
Housing Inventory is Lower –
Housing inventory is typically lower during this time of year. Most people try to list their homes in the spring and summer to coordinate with the kids’ school year. But that doesn’t mean fall isn’t a good time to sell! In fact, we’re still seeing more buyers in the market than homes, so that puts your home at an advantage when you list in the fall.
More Serious Buyers –
Less houses available means your home will have less competition. What’s more, buyers who need to move in fall may be more motivated to do so more quickly.
Consider the Weather & Fall Decor –
Plus the weather is still relatively warm for showings and open houses.
Just don’t let falling leaves or dead plants creep out potential buyers! Give your front porch some autumn awesomeness with pumpkins, mums and other seasonal decor.
If you’re thinking of selling, act now! The sooner professional photos are taken of your home, the better for more natural light and a lovelier outdoor space.
And work with a real estate professional who can advise you each step of the way!
Secrets to a Happier Home: Fall Closet Clean-Out
Clutter is known to add stress to our lives. De-cluttering, while it is a job that requires some work, will always pay off in the end when you are left with a more peaceful, happy home. Fall is a great time to de-clutter your home and one great place to start is with your closet.
A fall closet clean-out can help you approach the holiday season with more organization and preparation, which only helps to minimize the stress this time of year can bring.
Here are a few tips for a fall closet clean-out that should help you feel more organized and ready to face the coming weeks and months.
1. Take Inventory –
It’s important to see what you have when you begin cleaning out closets. If you are cleaning out clothes, it helps to make a list of what you have, what you wear often and what you don’t want to part with.
This way, you can begin to see what items are not as necessary and start weeding them out.
2. Planned Giving –
Giving gently used clothing and other items to a local charity is a great way to de-clutter while at the same time helping those in need. Do your research and decide which local charity (or charities) you’d like to donate your items to. Some local charities will even come to your house to pick up donations.
Giving back to the community is a great example to set for your children and family members so consider donating to charity when cleaning out closets or other household items.
3. Ask the Right Questions –
When cleaning out clothes, you might be tempted to keep more items than you actually need. It helps to ask yourself some questions about each item and your answers will help you determine if it should stay or go.
Ask yourself:
- Do I love it?
- Does it help create the image I wish to project?
- Is it flattering?
4. Create Order –
When you open your closet, does it look like a tornado has hit it? When cleaning out closets and organizing items, create some order by grouping like items and pieces together.
You can even arrange garments by color for a more visual aesthetic. There are no rules for this sort of thing…just find the order and organization that works for you!
5. Keep it Up –
We’ve all been there: working so hard to clean our a closet and get things organized just to have it become cluttered and messy again in a short time. Make a commitment to yourself and to your closet that you will try to maintain the organization through the entire season. Then, when winter rolls around you can organize again, but it won’t be such a daunting task.
An organized home is more peaceful and a peaceful home is a happy home. Here at Wallace, we believe in the power of home. If you’d like to find your next great home in Knoxville, Maryville, Farragut, or surrounding areas of East Tennessee, we’d be happy to offer our expertise.
